What this decline means

Something in the processing chain hiccuped — Shopify's own description is simply 'try again later.' Nothing is wrong with the customer, the card, or the balance.

Why it happens on subscription renewals

The merchant playbook

  1. Retry soon — hours, not days. Transient means transient; most of these clear on the next attempt.
  2. Say nothing to the customer. They did nothing, they can fix nothing, and a failure email for an infrastructure blip manufactures worry (and support tickets) from thin air.
  3. Track frequency: transient errors should be rare background noise. A spike concentrated in one hour or one day usually maps to a platform or gateway incident — check status pages before suspecting your setup.
  4. If the same subscription throws transient errors repeatedly across days, stop calling it transient and look deeper — a persistent 'temporary' failure is usually a different problem wearing the wrong label.

Should you retry?

Yes, promptly. This is the one decline family where a same-day retry is the right move and customer contact is the wrong one.

Common questions

Should transient errors count against my retry limit?

Ideally no — a schedule that burns its three retries on one infrastructure blip has nothing left for the real declines. Tooling that distinguishes error families can retry transient failures outside the main dunning sequence.

The customer got a failure email for a transient error — is that bad?

It's noise at best, trust damage at worst. Where your app allows it, exclude purely technical failures from customer-facing dunning emails.
