Failed payment recovery for Appstle Subscriptions merchants
Appstle Subscriptions is one of the most capable subscription apps on Shopify, and it does ship dunning basics: when a renewal fails, it can retry the charge on a schedule you configure and email the customer about the failure. If you've never opened those settings, do it today โ the defaults may not match how your customers actually pay. This guide covers what the built-in tooling does, where it stops, and how to recover more without migrating anything.
What Appstle's built-in dunning handles
- Automatic retries. You set how many times a failed charge is reattempted and how far apart. Settings vary by plan and configuration, so treat your own admin as the source of truth.
- Customer emails. Failure notifications and card-update requests can go to the subscriber automatically.
- Exhaustion behavior. After the final retry, the subscription can be paused or cancelled depending on configuration โ check which yours does, because auto-cancel silently converts a fixable failure into churn.
The three merchant-side blind spots
- You're not told. The dunning conversation happens between the app and your customer. "Notify me when a customer's payment fails" has been asked for in public reviews for years. Without an alert, your first sign of a problem is a revenue dip weeks later โ or a customer support email.
- One schedule for every failure. A fixed retry cadence treats an expired card (which no retry can save) the same as an insufficient-funds decline (which the right-timed retry often saves). Our companion guide breaks down why the failure reason should pick the treatment.
- No dollar accounting. There's no monthly "failures cost you $X, retries brought back $Y" number โ and without that, dunning settings never get revisited.
Five settings to review this week
- Retry count and spacing โ are attempts spread over enough days to catch a payday?
- Exhaustion behavior โ pause is usually safer than cancel; a paused subscriber can come back.
- Card-update emails โ is the request sent early for hard declines, and does the link work on mobile?
- Notification coverage โ does anyone on your team find out when a renewal fails?
- A monthly failure review โ even a manual export beats not looking.
Where Moorly fits: Moorly connects to Appstle through Appstle's own partner API โ no migration, no checkout changes, and your Appstle setup keeps running exactly as it does now. It alerts you the moment a renewal fails, puts a monthly dollar figure on failures, and (only when you turn actions on) works each failure by its reason while staying out of the way of Appstle's own retries. It starts read-only. Join the early-access list โ
